Premise

Soboko is an AI-powered interior design app built within a 24-hour hackathon challenge. It empowers users to scan, visualize, and personalize their homes through AR and AI-driven recommendations, transforming the way people design and experience their spaces.
In a single day, our three-member team delivered a working prototype that blended 3D visualization, smart home integration, and AI-assisted design, making home styling both intuitive and intelligent.

Problem Statement

Urban homeowners are eager to personalize their living spaces but face a recurring barrier — they can’t visualize how furniture, color palettes, or smart devices will actually look and function together. Traditional e-commerce and interior tools lack the technology to simulate this real-world harmony.

Meet Sarah, a 30-year-old homeowner passionate about style but frustrated by decision fatigue. She often says, “I wish I could see how it looks in my room before spending money.” For her, good design isn’t about luxury—it’s about balance, practicality, and confidence.

As urban living spaces shrink, homeowners need accessible, tech-enabled design tools that blend aesthetics, functionality, and affordability. Soboko aimed to democratize design—making professional-quality visualization and planning available to anyone with a smartphone.

RESEARCH

Clutching through time

Given the time constraint of 24 hours, we conducted targeted secondary and primary research. Each team member focused on a different dimension:

  • I analyzed market growth and design-tech trends in India.

  • Aryan explored cultural preferences and aesthetic fusions in Indian homes.

  • Ambuja examined tiny homes and compact-space innovations.

Approach

This combination revealed that visualization, space optimization, and smart integration are the top pain points for urban homeowners. Our findings formed the foundation for Soboko’s AI + AR strategy.

1. AR & 3D Visualization

Our research confirmed that AR-enabled visualization is the key to solving Sarah’s anxiety about spatial fit. Existing apps like DecorMatters inspired us to create realistic room scanning and 3D furniture previews, helping users make decisions with confidence.

AI-Driven Recommendations

We explored how AI generative design engines can tailor recommendations based on room size, furniture style, and lighting preferences. The goal was to build an adaptive system that learns user behavior to refine suggestions over time—making each session smarter and more personalized.

Small-Space Optimization

With rising urban density, users need designs that maximize function and comfort. Our insights emphasized:

  • Space optimization algorithms

  • Multi-functional and modular furniture

  • Vertical storage utilization

  • Light color palettes for visual spaciousness

Soboko’s design system and AI recommendations were built around these principles.

Sustainability & Local Culture

We recognized the growing shift toward eco-friendly and culturally blended interiors. From bamboo and recycled materials to handcrafted decor, Soboko’s future roadmap includes sustainability badges and regional material filters—bridging modern tech with Indian sensibilities.

INITIALS CHALLENGES

The great dilemma

Rapid Prototyping

Despite asset and font limitations (since we had to use marketplace resources), we embraced them creatively—settling on a space-themed visual language representing Soboko’s futuristic yet human-centered essence.

DECIDING FACTORS

Simplicity First

We built the core flow around progressive disclosure, ensuring Sarah only saw what mattered at each stage—reducing cognitive load and design fatigue.

Integrating Smart Functionality

Adding a dedicated page for smart home products like Smart LED lights sensor controlled appliances and integrated control devices like Alexa and Google home.
